Joel Gott - The Winemaker
@JoelGott

Inheriting a five-generation family history in the wine business,
Joel Gott has gone on to shake it up in more ways than one. Born in
1971 in St. Helena, CA, Joel was the quintessential winery kid,
accompanying his winemaking father, Cary Gott, and mother, Vicki,
to one winery outpost after another —from the Sierra Foothills to
the Central Coast, then to Monterey.
By the time Joel graduated from high school in 1989, he was ready
for a full-time immersion in wine production, and so he apprenticed
to Mike Lee, wine master at Kenwood Vineyards in Sonoma County. For
two years, Joel says, "I did the stuff no one else wanted to
do."
Leaving Kenwood, Joel indulged his other love: food. In 1993, Joel
and his brother, Duncan, purchased Palisades Market in Calistoga in
northern Napa Valley, and in 1999, they bought Taylor's Refresher,
a St. helena burger joint, revamping it as a destination eatery now
operating in three locations.
Joel took his first stab at winemaking in 1996, purchasing eight
tons of Zinfandel grapes from Amador County. "I made 600 cases,
priced it at $15 and sold it instantly, due in part to good reviews
from Robert Parker and Wine Spectator." The '96 Amador Zin put
Joel's new wine brand, Joel Gott Wines, on the map.
Convinced his plate wasn't full enough, in 2002 Joel became a
partner in the upstart Three Thieves. To this always irreverent,
sometimes zany projects, Joel brings a do-it-yourself streak, a
keen sense of where the wine market is headed, and an uncanny knack
for finding good grapes that don't cost a fortune—perfect
credentials for the Thieves.
