Charles Bieler
@CharlesBieler

Charles Bieler is an innovator, bringing to the business of wine an
eye for the creative opportunity, an ability to spot an opening
before it materializes and a knack for taking two or three
outrageous propositions and combining them into a winner.
Bieler's history gave him an uncanny eye for innovation alongside a
healthy respect for tradition. His formative years in southern
France—including seven years in Provence working with
California-based winemaker Bob Lindquist at the family's Chateau
Routas — forged an instinctive feel for Old World tastes and
winemaking. Back in the days when rosé was considered gauche,
Charles traversed the U.S. in a pink Cadillac, promoting the Routas
rosé, helping to light a fire under what is now a highly respected
category in the U.S. market. Charles continues to beat the pink
drum, turning out Bieler Père et Fils, a Syrah-based wine from
France made with his father, and the eponymous Carles &
Charles, produced with Charles Smith of Washington state's K
Vintners.
Bieler and his two partners launched the Three Thieves line in 2002
with an offbeat first entry: premium red wine in a retro jug at
bargain prices. They soon followed with the Bandit label in Tetra
Pak containers, an the Thieves commitment to value-priced wine and
eye-catching sustainable packaging has only multiplied since. Other
projects are always in the works. Most recently, his partnership
with avant-garde negotiants Betts & Scholl introduced Sombra, a
highly lauded, artisanal Oaxacan mezcal.
Bieler lives in New York City with his wife, food and wine writer
Kristen Wolfe Bieler, and two children, Sabine and Gabriel. It
should be noted that Charles runs a heck of a good 2:40 marathon.
